How to Survive with Major Depressive Disorder

Ahh, survival *exhale*. Something our ancestors have proven to us is possible, time and time again. Through evolution, survival of the fittest was the only way we and other species were able to have a legacy. It’s important to remember how far we’ve come.

Major Depressive Disorder also known as Clinical Depression, is a disorder that affects our moods, causing prolonged sadness and/or loss of former interests (Mayo Clinic, 2022).

This disorder can torpefy us. I would know. I was diagnosed in 2019, by a health care provider at my University. I didn’t even know I was plagued by it until an incredible Professor expressed his concerns to me.

That brings us to the first step: Diagnosis and/or Acceptance.

I recognize that health care in the United States is not accessible to everyone. With this knowledge it may not be as easy to get a clinical diagnosis. So acceptance as in acknowledging changed behavior and moods is an excellent way to start.

Step Two: Talk with your provider and conduct your own research on safe practices and treatments. There’s therapy, antidepressants, work and academic accommodations to name a few.

Step Three: Write/ note things that make/made you happy. These things may still increase your serotonin.

Step Four: Try to engage in at least 1 thing each day that once brought you joy.

Step Five: Always bathe/shower and eat something nutritional and tasty! Even though our brains may be suffering, we should still do our best to nurture our bodies. If this is hard for you, see if a trusted person will help you complete these tasks.

Step Six: Treat those who care about you kindly and with love. These people love and support you and want to see you at your best. Even when you are struggling, do everything you can to keep your heart pure and treat them well. If you happen to slip, apologize and make things right by not repeating the harm.

Mental health conditions are real. Some families and cultures aren’t aware of the severity of them. Just know there are safe spaces for you. If you know something is wrong, I believe you and many others will too.

Surviving is a continuous journey. Depression can be paired with intrusive and/or suicidal thoughts. Some days are easier than others.  The most important thing is to keep going, keep living. Your life matters, as all of ours do.

You will see brighter days. You will feel happiness again.

I wish you healing, strength and eternal happiness

Blessings from me,
