How to Build Your Self Security

I lived alone in Los Angeles, Miami, Cancun, Denver, and Milwaukee. I’ve vacationed solo in Rome, Italy, Las Vegas, NV, San Francisco, CA, Dallas, TX and New York, NY. Friends are constantly telling me how amazing it is that I’m so fearless and willing to travel and live alone. This fearlessness is due to some training I’ve received… Welcome to yours.

Physical Security: Traveling and living alone comes with potential threats.

  1.  ALWAYS be aware of your surroundings. Pay attention to your environment. Learn your location and how to return to your safe space (Home, Local Emergency Point).
  1. Don’t allow distractions to consume you. While traveling alone may require you to periodically check your phone, do not over consume. You need to be alert. Additionally, do not allow other people to distract you. A friendly conversation may cause you to miss your bus stop, or may even let your guard down to threats.
  1.   Recognize Danger. Briefly scan under cars, for hidden villains hoping to damage your achilles. Periodically check behind you to ensure you are not being followed. Hold your breath when coming around corners. This will protect you from inhaling toxins meant to make you unconscious. Check blind spots as you pass them to be prepared for potential attackers.
  1.  Switch up your routine. Whether you are on foot, car or transit, avoid taking the same route home everyday at the same time. Stalkers rely on consistency.
  1.  Avoid traveling in the dark.  Daylight is truly one of our greatest assets. Crime is less likely to occur during the day. If you must travel at night, travel in well lit areas, and along populated streets.
  1.  Start with host families or roommates. Living completely alone can cause a lot of anxiety. Having a private room in a shared home can bring you comfort. You know you are not alone if your address is revealed. Programs like Airbnb have verified hosts and guests so you can rest assured that you are safe.
  1.  Take a self defense course. Having some skills that allow you to defend yourself in case of emergency is essential. There are even free courses on YouTube.
  1.  Set up a security system.  Cameras, sound alarms, and additional locks will protect you as you rest and relax in your home. Whether you live alone or with roommates, these systems can provide you with comfort and legal protection. If you are worried about the security of your belongings, cameras will provide evidence of any malpractice.
  1.  Pray, manifest and think positively. You attract what you wish. If you wish only good things to happen in your life, and you treat others that way, you should receive good outcomes.
  1. Share your location with trusted peers. Apple and Google both allow you to share your real time location with friends and family. As does, Snapchat, Lyft, Uber, DoorDash and other platforms. Social media lives can also provide you with an audience in uncomfortable situations.

In addition to these guidelines, you should be wary of getting into cars with strangers, going into their homes, or inviting them to yours. Discernment is pertinent in these cases. When in doubt, don’t.

Just a bit of advice from me,
