How to Love Your Own Company

Have you ever experienced FOMO (Fear of Missing Out) ? Do you need people around you to validate yourself? Or do you spend time alone but you have to be consuming media or food to enjoy yourself?

If these relate to you, or you simply enjoy any opportunity for self development, this is for you.

Sitting in silence: The first step to loving your own company is being able to be alone with no additional distractions.

  • Take a deep breath, preferably with your eyes closed.
  • Silence your phone
  • Turn off your television
  • Set aside your video games, computers, music and other hobbies
  • Take 3 deep breaths (inhale and exhale 3 times each)
  • What’s on your mind ?
  • Talk to yourself like you would a friend or a therapist
  • Be in silence with yourself for at least 5 minutes
  • Increase the time with each practice

Once you begin to feel comfortable with yourself in silence, you have mastered the art of meditation. Wise leaders have said that meditation reveals what you truly need. If you fall asleep, your body needs rest. If you overthink, your mind craves a result. Determine what your body and mind need.

Take care of yourself: Ensure that you take a shower or bath. Practice dental hygiene. Brush your hair and moisturize your skin. Adorn yourself with perfumes and comfortable clothes. Relax in a clean home. Embrace yourself in comfortable furniture. Eat a balanced meal that uplifts your taste buds.

When we take care of ourselves we teach our brains that we matter. We show our bodies that we love them. We all deserve nurturing. We must start by nurturing ourselves.

Monitor your health: Incorporate fresh produce and high quality water into your daily diet. Stretch your body. Give yourself massages in tense places. Activate your muscles. Burn calories in an enjoyable manner. Limit or eliminate your alcohol and drug intake. Get fresh air and sunlight.

Example: After I eat, I stand for 15 minutes, or engage my muscles before lounging again. If I  live a sedentary life I  begin to deteriorate my muscles and energy.

ReEngage in hobbies: After you’ve mastered silence, begin to incorporate hobbies you enjoy. Do you enjoy these activities without others’ approval? How do you feel when you’re engaging in these hobbies?

It’s essential that you love what you’re doing despite what others may think. So long as the activity is legal and does not harm other individuals.

In summary, spending time in silence, taking care of yourself, and engaging in fond moments are ways to love your own company.
